GeForce GTX 570
GeForce GTX 570
Happy new year! Two thousand ten was a big year for powerful graphics cards, and 2011 will be no different. Having just been introduced to the Radeon HD 6900-series and GeForce GTX 570, we're on the cusp of a dual-GPU Radeon 6990, code-named Antilles. Our hope, of course, will be that Nvidia counters with its own GF110-based board to make the ultra-high-end a lot more interesting early on.
What about the market as it stands today, though? Cards are disappearing off of store shelves and prices are shifting. The Radeon HD 5800-series is already becoming scarce, but blowout pricing makes these cards a potentially great deal (with some Radeon HD 5850s and 5870s as low as $170 and $270, respectively). We can't give them a solid recommendation because availability is limited, but at these prices you should certainly consider a discounted Radeon HD 5800 card if you can find it.
The new Radeon HD 6800s recently dropped a few dollars, too, with the 6850 and 6870 found as low as $180 and $230. The GeForce GTX 460 is priced close to the 6850, but the GeForce GTX 470 typically costs $30 more than the 6870, at the time of writing. This spread is a little higher than it should be from a price/performance valuation, so we're taking the recommendation away from the GeForce GTX 470 until the cost falls a little more in line.
The flagships from both camps are increasingly becoming hard to find, especially the Radeon HD 5970. This makes sense, since it will soon be replaced, but the GeForce GTX 580 is also looking limited, especially on Newegg and Zipzoomfly (TigerDirect and Mwave both have a handful of brands in stock). Perhaps the shortage is due to the inevitable demand of the holidays, but we'll keep an eye on retail stock nevertheless.
Aside from this, the world waits to see what Sandy Bridge and Fusion will soon do for integrated graphics, and we wait with bated breath for the new dual GPU-equipped high end to arrive.
A few simple guidelines to keep in mind when reading this list:

A few simple guidelines to keep in mind when reading this list:
- This list is for gamers who want to get the most for their money. If you don’t play games, then the cards on this list are more expensive than what you really need. We've added a reference page at the end of the column covering integrated graphics processors, which is likely more apropos.
- The criteria to get on this list are strictly price/performance. We acknowledge that recommendations for multiple video cards, such as two Radeon cards in CrossFire mode or two GeForce cards in SLI, typically require a motherboard that supports CrossFire or SLI and a chassis with more space to install multiple graphics cards. They also require a beefier power supply compared to what a single card needs, and will almost certainly produce more heat than a single card. Keep these factors in mind when making your purchasing decision. In most cases, if we have recommended a multiple-card solution, we try to recommend a single-card honorable mention at a comparable price point for those who find multi-card setups undesirable.
- Prices and availability change on a daily basis. We can’t base our decisions on always-changing pricing information, but we can list some good cards that you probably won’t regret buying at the price ranges we suggest, along with real-time prices from our PriceGrabber engine, for your reference.
- The list is based on some of the best U.S. prices from online retailers. In other countries or at retail stores, your mileage will most certainly vary.
- These are new card prices. No used or open-box cards are in the list; they might represent a good deal, but it’s outside the scope of what we’re trying to do.

Xperia Play price
Xperia Play price
The folks over at theGamerBuzz recently discovered a contest on Facebook offering the Xperia Play up for grabs (PlayStation Phone for those of you still out of the loop) and might have uncovered the price of the Xperia Play at the same time. In the rules of the contest, where the organizers usually let people know the approximate value of the prize, it is stated that the prize is worth $400. Since the prize of the contest is the Xperia Play, we can put the price of the phone to be approximately $400, and that is how much it costs unsubsidized. With carriers thrown into the mix, we should see the phone selling for much cheaper with a 2-year contract, although $400 is not a bad price to pay for the first ever PlayStation-certified Android handphone. What do you think of the $400 price tag? Will you be interested in purchasing it? Head here to check out our hands-on experience with the Xperia Play.

ipad2 should buy or not
ipad2 should buy or not
After mulling over why you should buy the iPad 2 at launch, the logical follow-up is why you shouldn't get one and there are many reasons to hold back on buying that tablet with only one hour to go.
The 12 versions of the iPad 2 are almost certainly going to fall in price in the near future as Apple gives more leeway to its partners to deliver vouchers and discounts. Apple itself is very unlikely to cut prices but rather than penalising its partners as it did in the past, it will allow them more flexibility.
The accessories are expensive right now but will become less expensive in the future as more companies, especially those from the far-east Asia, get their hands on the final product and pump out weird and wonderful iPad 2 accessories.
Rivals are getting better so it is worth waiting a bit and seeing what Android tablets like the HTC Flyer, the Motorola XOOM and others will look like and feel at launch. Given that Samsung prelaunched its 10-inch tablet only a few months ago only to replace it two days ago with a new slimmer one shows how resourceful some companies can be. As Apple is likely to stick to a yearly product cycle, competitors have plenty of time to come up with something more spectacular within the next few months
The improvements are not hugely impressive compared to the original iPad, so if you have the old one, it might be better just to stick to the current one instead either until the pip squeak or if you desperately need the additional CPU horsepower, the better graphics capabilities or the two cameras for Facetime.
WiFi + 3G or WiFi only Model?
If you’re planning on buying your first ever iPad tomorrow this is probably the decision you’re struggling with the most, but in reality it’s the easiest choice to make. If you have an iPhone then it makes little sense to purchase a 3G enabled iPad 2 when you can simply tether the iPad to your iPhone using the new HotSpot feature in iOS 4.3, or jailbreak your iPhone and run MyWi 4.0. Why pay an extra $130 for the 3G unit AND pay an extra $25 a month just to use that data connection when you can save yourself all that money by tethering to your iPhone?
However, there are a lot of future iPad 2 users who don’t have a smartphone to tether too. Even so, it’s still probably better to just get the WiFi version unless you plan on using your iPad a lot on the road, or outside where there are no WiFi hotspots. When I bought my original WiFi-only iPad last year it was surprising how many open wireless hotspots exist everywhere, even outside of my neighborhood or school. Living in a rural area is the only place where I can think you might want to consider buying the 3G iPad 2, but even then you really should check AT&T and Verizon’s coverage maps to make sure they have good 3G coverage in your area.
So, avoid the 3G models; stick with WiFi only.
Mow Much Storage Should I Get?:
That 64GB model looks really tempting with all that juicy storage space. Think of how many Apps you can fit on that puppy! However, Apps don’t take up that much room on your iPad. It’s all those music, movies and photos that occupy most of the storage on an iOS device. Before considering whether to get the 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB model you really need to consider what you’re going to be using it for. Do you travel a lot? If so then you might want the 32GB or 64GB unit so that you can pack it with movies to entertain you on your many business trips without having to re-sync new ones all the time. Your average full-length movie occupies 700MB of storage space. But if you’re going to mostly be using your iPad around the house then you can use Air Video to stream videos from your iMac or MacBook. I’m a big music lover and have a 210GB music library. There’s not an Apple device that can hold everything I want on it, so I rely on great cloud services like Spotify for my music, DropBox for my files, and Flickr for photos, leaving me with plenty of room for anything else.
Unless you’re looking to do some heavy lifting on your iPad most users will get by just fine with 16GB.
Black or White?:
This one comes down to personal taste, of course. There seems to be absolutely no difference between the white model and the black model. Personally, I think the white iPad looks a little bit more like a toy than the sexy black iPad. Some people say that the black bezel makes video playback look better because it’s a darker background, but most people probably won’t notice any difference at all.
However, you should go with black. Why? Because you won’t regret it in 6 months time, like you’ll regret getting white. For example, a couple of years ago, I thought the white iPhone 3G was more distinctive than the black. Plus it would be easier to spot lying around the house. But I eventually got tired of the white. It started getting on my nerves. Plus it showed nicks, scratches and filth. Not so with the black iPhone 4.
Go with black — it is classy, timeless, and you won’t regret it later.
Wrap Up:
In conclusion, I think it’s fairly safe to say that the 16GB WiFi only iPad 2 will be Apple’s biggest seller. It’s the cheapest option but it’s also everything that 90% of iPad users need. Some people may have special circumstances where they need that 3G connection or extra storage space, but most iPad owners use their iPad around the house for simple tasks such as surfing the net, playing games, listening to music, watching video and exploring apps. While it can be tempting to go all in and buy the 64GB iPad 2 with 3G and WiFi, most people are going to find that paying $829 for all those little extras is a bit of overkill. Plus, you know you’re just going to want to sell your iPad 2 in 11 months or so to get the iPad 3 when it comes out
After mulling over why you should buy the iPad 2 at launch, the logical follow-up is why you shouldn't get one and there are many reasons to hold back on buying that tablet with only one hour to go.
We’ve been getting a lot of questions from readers and friends over which iPad 2 you should buy. Should you go with WiFi only, or the 3G version for when you’re not around a hotspot? How much storage do you need? And most importantly, how do you choose between black or white?
The answer is that you should get the 16GB WiFi-only model in black. Here’s why:WiFi + 3G or WiFi only Model?

Battlefield 3 Pre-orders up 700% from BC2
Battlefield 3 Pre-orders up 700% from BC2
Speaking on last night’s earnings call, Frank Gibeau, president of EA’s Games label, believes Battlefield 3 is “flat out” superior to chief rival and current FPS market leader Call of Duty.
Gibeau said in regards to Battlefield 3, "The game is built on our brand-new Frostbite 2 Engine. It takes the battle to an urban landscape with dynamic weapons, destructible environments, vehicular warfare and a team oriented multiplayer that provides a highly competitive social experience.”
He further added, "We know we had a big competitor, but head-to-head with Call of Duty in Q3, we have the superior game engine, superior development studio and a flat out superior game... Come and see for yourself. We'll be showing brand new code and features at E3, I encourage everyone to make time for Battlefield 3."
What might be bolstering Gibeau’s confidence aside from the mostly positive reaction to Battlefield 3 are the pre-order numbers themselves. Pre-orders for Battlefield 3 are up more than 700% compared to the same period before the launch of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Gibeau added, "A lot of people are telling us they want to play this game on day one."
Do you think Battlefield 3 has a chance against this year’s Call of Duty juggernaut? If there’s one FPS franchise that might be able to do it, I’m guessing Battlefield might be it. Battlefield 3 has been in development for more than 6 years and is easily one of the most beloved franchises on the PC and judging from the pre-order numbers, it looks like EA is well on-track for a major FPS showdown this coming fall.
